Angels fighting through tough month

It has been a really tough month for the Los Angels Angels, who are struggling in the aftermath of the death of pitcher Nick Adenhart.

It’s been an emotional time for a team that never saw the tragedy that was Adenhart’s death coming.

Add to that the number of players on the disabled list and their losing record and the Angels are battling through a lot of adversity.

The team is certainly not accustomed to its current position in the American League West standings after ruling the division for the past decade.

It’s still very early in the season, but it’s a big question whether or not the Angels can overcome all of this to get back into the division race.

Angels off to slow start

The Los Angeles Angels were heavy favorites coming into the season to win the American League West yet again, but they certainly haven’t played like it during the first two weeks of the year.

The Angels have a solid pitching staff, but injuries to Kelvim Escobar and Ervin Santana have not helped matters.

The offense is starting to become a concern after the team lost Mark Teixeira in the offseason. It also doesn’t help that Vladamir Guerrero is injury-prone and starting to see a decline in his performance.

The closer situation is in limbo as well after the Angels let Francisco Rodriguez sign with the New York Mets in the offseason.

The Seattle Mariners have sprinted out to an early lead behind their top heavy pitching staff, and it will be interesting to see how long they can hang on.

Angels seek to hit the road

It will take time for the Angels to return to normalcy after the loss of rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart, who was killed in a car accident by a drunk driver, but the Angels hope to find their sanctuary on the road.

“We’re still numb, we’re still cloudy,” center fielder Torii Hunter said. “You sit in the clubhouse and keep waiting for him to come in. … I think it will be good for us to get a change of scenery. It will kind of ice the swelling.”

They begin a six-game trip in Seattle—the Angels’ first games away from home since
Adenharrt and two of his friends passed.
